"In the past, tanks stopped Azans but this time Azans blocked the way of tanks," says CM Shahbaz Sharif

Despite the constant bombardment of criticism, Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif is known for his energetic efforts to bring infrastructure improvements in the province. His recent Turkish visit also reflects his untiring struggle in order to follow and import the tremendous development in former Ottoman lands in the last two decades.  The people of Turkey and Pakistan are traditionally and historically bound in a warm relationship since Indian Muslims supported Ottoman Khilafat after the First World War. CM visit was an effort to enhance these relations and seek bilateral cooperation between the two governments. In a historic statement, he said that in the past, tanks stopped azans in Turkey but this time azans blocked the way of tanks and forced them to flee.

According to the government of Punjab website, during the three days short visit from August 25 to August 27,  remarkable developments in Turkey dazzled and mesmerized the Chief Minister at several occasions and he expressed the will to bring the same innovations in different sectors back home. Besides a one to one meeting with Tayyip Erdogan, the highlights of his visit include attending the opening ceremony of Yavuz Sultan Bridge, an MOU of bilateral cooperation with the Health Minister and a meeting with Speaker National Assembly Ismail Kahraman .

It was his first visit to Turkey after the failed coup. While the sequence of events and consequences were altogether different, Sharif family itself has faced a similar coup by armed forces in 1999. The Chief Minister paid tributes to the Turk leadership and people with open hearts for foiling up the coup.
During the visit, he made every effort to explore avenues of further cooperation with Turk government and business sector. From the airport, the CM and his delegation were arranged to visit the Culinary School and Hotel Management Institute which brings up intercontinental chefs to support the flourishing Turkish hotel industry and tourism. He expressed the desire to have a similar setup in Punjab.

CM also had an early morning meeting with a delegation of General Electric Company which is already engaged in various energy projects in Punjab including Bhikki Power Plant.
To enhance cooperation in the health sector and sign a Memorandum of Understanding, he met with Turkish Health Minister, Dr. Recep Akdag. The CM also expressed his gratitude to the Turkish leaders for setting up the Tayyip Erdogan Hospital in Muzaffargarh, a gift from Turkey to Pakistan. It was agreed that a delegation of Turkish healthcare experts will visit Punjab next month and submit its recommendations after complete review of the healthcare system in the province.
