Tazeen
Hasan Responding to India Times' journalist who innocently attempted to
enlist the irresponsible Nuclear Powers. While he declares India a
responsible country, quite ridiculously the list includes Turkey and
Philipines who do not even have a nuclear program. Yet, he totally
forgets Israel who attacked Iraq's nuclear sites twice in the past
without provocation and often threatens Iran.
It was 2004, six years after Pakistan successfully detonated its first Nuke in Chagai. A world-renowned Egyptian political scientist Muhammad Selim (who has worked closely with the United Nations and the European Union) was invited at Area Study Centre for Europe, University of Karachi. Dr. Selim was directly coming from Japan. One of the interesting anecdotes he shared about his trip was about Japanese uneasiness on the possibly irresponsible use of Pakistan's Nukes. Dr. Selim asked them why you people do not feel uneasy about Indian and Israeli Nukes? "Well, They are democracies", he was told. Dr. Selim's reaction to Japanese was very logical , "You must be the last nation on earth to say that."
If there is any country on the planet that ever used its nuclear capability irresponsibly, it is the United States. Nonetheless, the Indian journalist MR. Dabas Mahindar seems to be quite innocent regarding the clear facts when he portrays India to be "responsible" despite "several provocations by its errant neighbor" in his article Here Are Six People Who Shouldn't Have Their Hands On Nukes. Let me remind you, Mr. Dabas responsible nuclear powers do not jeopardize peace with their nuclear neighbors by threatening to break them into pieces on their independence day. They do not claim surgical strikes either.
Let me remind you something else Mr. Dabas. Pakistan's Nuke development was in response to the loss of East Pakistan. It was Indian army who illegally crossed Pakistani border in 1971. Despite Indian accusations of intervention, Pakistan army has never crossed the border to support Kashmiris. Notably, Indian leaders now admit with documentary proofs that it was their long-standing plan to separate East Pakistan and they achieved their goals in 1971. Who has been more irresponsible Mr. Dabas?
As far as Pakistani Nukes are concerned, they are crucial for its vulnerable security because Pakistan's capability to fight a conventional war is much lower than that of India, who often talks and behaves irresponsibly. For Pakistan, Nukes are a deterrent in case India cast a bad eye on any other region.
Let me also remind you further that Pakistan as a responsible nuclear power has proposed a number of bilateral or regional non-proliferation steps. The list includes a joint Indo-Pakistan declaration renouncing the acquisition or manufacture of nuclear weapons, in 1978; Simultaneous adherence to the NPT and mutual inspections by India and Pakistan of each other's nuclear facilities, in 1979; a bilateral or regional nuclear test-ban treaty, in 1987; a South Asia Zero-Missile Zone, in 1994. Notably, India rejected all six proposals. Who is more responsible?
If Pakistan provided consultancy to any other country, may I ask Mr. Dabas who is responsible for providing nuclear technology to Israel? and where he detonated his bombs? Let me tell you Israel tested his Nukes in Naveda, USA. Who is more irresponsible? And by the way, Mr. Dabas, FYI Philippines, and Turkey are not nuclear powers and Raheel Sharif is retiring next month. I'll advise Mr. Dabas to read basic historical and geopolitical facts before writing on such sensitive topics.
