Hasan raising questions about the promotion of global contents by
Netflix in Pakistan while same company is taking a different route in
India. Both Amazon and Netflix are scouting India for Indian local
contents providing employment to tens of thousands Indian entertainment
industry workers.
"Are you currently in Pakistan and want to watch Netflix? Do you already have a Netflix subscription and want to enjoy it, even when on holiday in Pakistan? Or are you living permanently in Pakistan and just want to sign up for Netflix and enjoy their services in Pakistan?," says the Netflix Pakistan website.
Netflix launched its services in Pakistan in coordination with PTCL. PTCL is the only service provider in Pakistan with advanced caching servers and technical pairing with Netflix to offer the superior viewing experience since Netflix’s global launch in January 2016. The Netflix Pakistan website says users can start using services starting $7.99 a month, with a free month offer.
But its rival Amazon has taken a different route to extend its influence in the Subcontinent. It is wooing India. The strategy Amazon is using is, 'Think globally, Act locally' with its video streaming service. Amazon is running "Baahubali: The Lost Legends,a new animated series in India based on a local blockbuster movie."
According to details Pakistani telco PTCL has signed a partnership agreement with Netflix. The two companies will coordinate their resources to provide digital experience and out standing viewing experience to the consumers. The Pakistani counterpart PTCL will be responsible for promoting the original Netflix content in Pakistan.
According to Indian media news, Amazon Studios chief Roy Price frequents India scouting for locally appealing programming for Amazon’s forthcoming video service. Is there any such effort from Netflix to scout for local Pakistani stuff. The answer is a clear no.
Now let's come to the Netflix Indian operations. Netflix launched its operation in India ten months ago and they have made a deal with Indian producer Phantom Films for its new Indian original series, based on the internationally acclaimed Mumbai crime novel “Sacred Games."
However in Pakistan Netflix has not shown any interest in local contents. Although Pakistani local entertainment channels are producing world class programs which are very popular even in India. Promotion of locally produced programs can provide employment to thousands of people engaged with entertainment industry.
Why do same Multinationals discriminate Pakistan in such a way. Is there any journalist in Pakistan raising voice over this issue? Where are Kamran Khan and Hamid Mir? Entertainment Industry in Pakistan is being looted in this way and is snatching livelihood from Pakistani showbiz industry workers.
In this age of cut throat competition, Netflix contents will definitely try to beat Pakistani entertainment programs and this will ruin our national popular and viable channels in favor of American and European entertainment industry. Has anyone thought about the economic aspects of such move? PTCL people simply don't care because they are getting business but what about the concerned ministries? They simply don't care or their share in Multinational's profit transferred promptly to their Swiss bank Accounts?
