Girl fell to her death from balcony in Australia trying to escape her 'Tinder' date

While the social media is swiftly transforming our daily lives, news from the western hemisphere regarding the careless  usage of cyber platforms are threatening.  Since the last couple of months, Pokemon Go hype was the focus of media attention and now Tinder has emerged as the next pivotal candidate. An interesting but tragic case in Austrailia has recently attracted heavy media coverage. According to the police report, a 26-year-old woman was so intimidated by her Tinder date that she  plunged to her death from his apartment's  balcony while trying to escape from him.

The case prompted police warnings to users of the popular dating apps to be careful when arranging meetings with strangers. Gable Tostee, who is accused of killing the woman during a date arranged via Tinder, was recorded threatening to “chuck her” from his 14th-floor balcony shortly before she fell to her death.A court in Australia heard that Tostee threatened and strangled Warriena Wright, a New Zealand tourist, after they met for the first time and went back to his apartment. Ms Wright allegedly fled to the balcony in fear and was attempting to escape by climbing down when she fell.

Tostee has pleaded not guilty and denied strangling Ms Wright, insisting that he restrained her in self-defence. His lawyer Saul Holt QC claimed that Ms Wright, who was visiting Australia for a two-week holiday, became violent and threw decorative rocks at him as well as hitting him with a clamp from a telescope.

These news raise the stakes even in developing countries like Pakistan where the use of social media has escalated since the introduction of Cellular data technology. The government, civil society, education system and parents need to plan how to face the challenges of a  social media obsessed world. Otherwise we'll lose everything -Lock, stocks and barrel in this cyber fire.
