While Hamid Mir, Kamran Khan and
Talat Hussain have made their own niche as top Pakistani TV anchors
and their talk shows have remained popular among the serious
news viewers since the arrival of talk shows on the Pakistani media
landscape, these three veteran journalists stand
nowhere in Top Ten program ratings during Prime Time Slot according to
the data published by Media Logic. However, Twitter and YouTube
Statistics do not endorse Media Logic data.
Commentators say that the viewing trends in Pakistan seem to range from serious investigative news stories to banal stuff. Viewers now want more masala in Talk shows and they love to watch spicy brands like Kamran Shahid on Dunya, Javed Chaudhry on Express, Paras Khursheed on Samaa News and Nadia Mirza on News One.
Hamid Mir a seasoned TV anchor is conducting a talk show on Geo News since 2002 and was famous as the biggest rating puller for his primetime stories. His program Capital Talk airs on Geo Primetime from 8 to 9 pm, the top prime time slot and is considered one of the top-ranked programs.
Similarly, senior journalist and anchor Syed Talat Hussain is also conducting a prime time show on Geo News from 10 pm to 11 pm titled Naya Pakistan. Talat started his anchoring career from PTV and then swiftly moved to Aaj News and made his mark in the 10 pm slot. He is also famous for his non-sensational and well-balanced fact-based stories. He swiftly switched channels from Aaj to Express and then Dawn, and finally seems to have dropped anchor at Geo News.
According to Media Logic's ratings for the month of August; Samaa is in the lead in the 24 hour News category; followed by Geo News. But during the primetime slots Geo takes the lead in the news category followed by Samaa News. In the Talk Shows Category, neither Hamid Mir and nor Talat Hussain stood anywhere in the Top Ten program Ratings in the primetime Slot.
Geo News's 'Aaj Shahzaib Khanzada kay saath' takes the lead with a rating of 1123, while ARY's 11th Hour hosted by Waseem Badami takes second position with a rating of 814. 'Off the Record' of ARY News hosted by Kashif Abbasi gets third position with a rating of 805 and Samaa's Awaaz hosted by Shehzad Ahmed gets 4th position with the ratings of 788. Samaa's News Beat hosted by Paras Khursheed secures fifth position with a rating of 757.
However, one other matrix must be noted and carefully analyzed for the long run popularity of the anchors and that is what Twitter indicates. While Hamid Mir appears to be the most popular TV Anchor on Twitter with 2.53 million followers, Talat Hussain stands second with 1.75 million followers, and Kashif Abbasi has the third largest following with 1.72 million. Shahzeb Khanzada stands fourth with 1.49 Million, Waseem Badami fifth with 1.04 million and Nusrat Javed sixth with 157 K in this list. Paras Khursheed and Javed Choudhary probably do not maintain Twitter accounts. And this clearly speaks of Hamid Mir's popularity as the top Pakistani anchor and Journalist.
It should be noted that YouTube Statistics also deny endorsing the Media Logic Data. Hamid Mir is still the most viewed anchor on YouTube. His reply to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Baluchistan issue has been viewed about two hundred thousand times on a single post in August 2016.
